Özlem Şimşek was born in Istanbul in 1982. She graduated from Marmara University, Department of Journalism, and received her Master’s Degree in photography from Dokuz Eylül University and her PhD in Art and Design from Yıldız Technical University. She is currently living and working in Istanbul.
Examining the portraits of women of well-known artists in Turkish art history, she re-interprets and restages the scenes in the photographs. She presents herself as the main character in these scenes. In these works, which portray paintings made by men, she questions “the identity and representation of modern Turkish women”.
She has participated in many mixed exhibitions, opened solo exhibitions and published catalogues.
